Poise
Akari Unfolded Collection For The Noguchi Museum
YMER&MALTA / Sebastian Bergne
2018
Poise balances a bold geometric form with the delicacy of paper, evoking a clean, modern take on origami. The installation consists of one S pendant and two L pendants, each reflecting a minimalist aesthetic grounded in thoughtful design.
Like the iconic Akari series from the 1950s, the assembly of the paper shade is an integral part of the experience, inviting the user into an intimate process of creation and connection with the object.
While researching Isamu Noguchi’s work for the Akari Unfolded collection, Valérie Maltaverne was particularly struck by one of his sculptures: a mobile crafted from small beach-found objects. Inspired by its balance and spontaneity, she collaborated with Sebastian Bergne to develop Poise.
A weighted element at the end of the cord, crafted by a French fishing lead manufacturer, was precisely engineered to achieve the perfect angle. Its form echoes the graphic lines of the paper shade, reinforcing the visual harmony of the piece.
Arriving at the ideal folding process and achieving a soft, diffused light required extensive experimentation with materials and prototypes. The result is a lamp that is both technical and poetic.
Poise was presented at The Noguchi Museum in New York.
